Root-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-Active-Build-UCUAMF3
AT&T is currently pushing out a relatively minor over-the-air stability update to all its carrier-branded Galaxy S4 Active smartphones currently located in the United States. Sadly, this upgrade doesn’t bring much in terms of added functionality, but it does include an updated edition of Google Maps, some security improvements and a handful of ‘system stability developments,’ aimed at enhancing connectivity when using voice calling and SMS.
Hit the break below for the full changelog.
  • The latest version of Google Maps
  • Security improvements
  • Improved connectivity via voice calling and SMS
If you own an AT&T-branded S4 Active and have not yet received the OTA update, you can head into “Settings,” then “About Device,” and select “Check for Updates” to manually scan for the upgrade. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification on your handset prompting you to download and install the update.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha Review

Samsung Galaxy Alpha

Samsung finally does metal

In years gone by, Samsung phones have been synonymous with unspectacular plastic construction. At one time it was shiny, slimy plastic that the No. 1 Android phone maker utilized. More recently Samsung has veered towards faux leather and dimpled soft-touch plastic. In any case, the company seemed content leaving more exotic materials to the likes of Apple and HTC.
No more.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha sees the Korean electronics giant finally taking premium materials seriously as a point of differentiation, while offering high-end specs in a device smaller than the typical 5-inch Android slab. It's available now in Europe; on Sept. 26 it launches on AT&T in the U.S.
Samsung calls it the future of its smartphone design language. We say it's a great phone with just a couple of tragic flaws.

Android L to launch November 1?

Now that the suspense surrounding Apple's new iPhone and iOS 8 is dying down, techies are turning their attention next to the release of the newest version of Google's Android mobile operating system.

Although Google has yet to announce its official name, the operating system is expected to adopt a food-related name like its predecessors—in this case, rumored to be "Lemon Meringue Pie."

Android enthusiast site Android Authority, citing at least two different sources close to Google, disclosed November 1 as the date of Android L's debut and October 16 as the possible release date of HTC's Nexus 9.

"While Android L and new Nexus hardware will be shown off in mid-October, the final version of Android L won’t officially be available until November 1st, according to our sources," Android Authority said.

It added it remains unclear whether it will be when the latest Nexus hardware with Android L will be sold, when existing Nexus devices will get the update, or both.

"Either way, the wait for Android L and the next generation of the Nexus family appears to almost be over!" it said.

PC World added Google usually unveils its newest Nexus hardware to show a major Android update.

It noted Google partnered with Asus on the first two generations of the Nexus 7 tablet, but now said rumors suggest it will be HTC this time.

Also, PC World said Google is reportedly partnering with Motorola on a 5.9-inch phablet codenamed Shamu.

"Google could go with an enormous device, given there are plenty of non-supersized Android phones out there, but it's hard to see something close to the Galaxy Mega held up as the latest and greatest of Android. Some rumors put the newest Nexus phone at a more modest 5.2 inches," PC World said. Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News

LG and Sony Reportedly Slash Prices of Android Smartphones in India

lg_g3_india_launch.jpg
Following Samsung, consumer electronics giants LG and Sony appear to be the latest handset manufacturers to slash prices of some of their smartphones in India.
According to an established Mumbai-based retailer, Mahesh Telecom, various LG andSony smartphones have received price significant cuts in India, though neither company has made official announcements.
LG's 2014 flagship smartphone, the LG G3, has reportedly received a price cut of Rs. 5,000 in India. The LG G3 was launched in India in 2 variants - 16GB with 2GB of RAM at Rs. 47,990 and 32GB with 3GB of RAM at Rs. 50,990. The retailer adds the new prices are effective Wednesday.

Other LG smartphones that reportedly received price cuts include LG L60 Dual with anew price of Rs. 7,300 (earlier price of Rs. 9,000); LG L70 Dual with a new price of Rs. 10,499 (launched at Rs. 15,000), and the LG F70 with a new price of Rs. 13,499 (launchedat Rs. 18,499).

Considering that the source is an offline retailer, we can expect that the new prices are currently only applicable for physical stores. Notably, LG's India site is still showing the old prices for all 4 phones.
Sony, on the other hand, ahead of its Thursday launch event where it is expected to launch Xperia Z3 family of devices in India, has reportedly reduced the price of the Xperia Z2. As per the retailer, the Xperia Z2 that launched in India at Rs. 49,990 will be retailing with a massive price cut of Rs. 10,000 at Rs. 39,999.
Other Sony phones that reportedly received the price slash include Xperia Z1, with a new price of Rs. 32,999 (down from its launch price of Rs. 44,990); Xperia M2 Dual at Rs. 17,999 (down from its launch price of Rs. 21,990); Xperia SP at Rs. 15,999 (down from its launch price of Rs. 25,490); Xperia E1 Dual at Rs. 6999 (down from its launch priceof Rs. 10,490), and lastly the Xperia E1 at Rs. 5,999 (down from its launch price of Rs. 9,490).
Not too long ago, Samsung India, due to competition with Google's Android One phones, officially slashed the price of the Galaxy Core 2 by roughly 33 percent to Rs. 8,007 from Rs. 11,990, and the price of Galaxy S Duos 3 was slashed to Rs. 7,497 from anearlier price tag of Rs. 8,150.

BlackBerry Launches Another Comeback Bid With Square-Screen Passport

BlackBerry launched an unconventional new smartphone dubbed the Passport on Wednesday as it embarked on what may be the most critical phase of its long turnaround push.
At simultaneous events in Toronto, London and Dubai, BlackBerry showed off the device, which is the size and shape of a closed passport, with a large square touchscreen as well as a keyboard. The Passport comes to market as the phones of BlackBerry's rivals converge on a single profile, with tall, rectangular screens and smooth corners.
Users can type on the Passport's keyboard to enter text, or swipe lightly across it to navigate through the phone.
BlackBerry recently concluded a three-year restructuring process, and it is now up to Chief Executive John Chen to prove that the company's new devices and services are capable of generating sustainable new streams of revenue and returning it to profit.
"BlackBerry is still fighting for survival. They still need to turn around and develop a viable ongoing business model," said Morningstar analyst Brian Colello.
"Their products are certainly pointing toward that and the new strategy makes sense, but there is still a lot of execution risk at this point in a very competitive market."
At the Toronto event, Chen brought out retired National Hockey League star Wayne Gretzky to talk up the Passport's features.
The device is set to go on sale in some markets on Wednesday, with a suggested introductory retail price of CAD 699 (roughly Rs. 38,400) in Canada and $599 in the United States.
BlackBerry said it expects the price on contract to be about $249, depending on the carrier, and that the phone should be available in more than 30 countries by the end of the year. It will be carried by AT&T in the United States.
Passport users will be able to download apps from Amazon's app store, previously only available for Android-based phones. BlackBerry announced the deal that cleared the way for its customers to access Amazon's store in June.
The launch kicks off a busy period for Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry. The company is set to report its second-quarter results on Friday and within a couple of months it is also expected to launch the long-awaited BlackBerry Classic, which bears similarities to its once wildly popular Bold smartphone.
"BlackBerry just needs one hit phone for now," Colello said. "It doesn't quite matter whether it is the Passport, the Classic or anything else, but they do need one device to jump-start the hardware business again."
The company hopes the Classic and the launch of its new mobile device management system - BlackBerry Enterprise Service 12 (BES12) - will help it claw back ground ceded to rivals in both the hardware and services market.
The BES 12 platform will allow IT managers at large companies and government agencies to not only manage and secure BlackBerry devices, but also manage Windows-based devices, and more easily administer Android and iOS devices.
Chen, a well-regarded turnaround expert in the tech sector, wants BlackBerry to remain a competitor in the smartphone arena, but he is focused on reshaping the company to build on its core strengths in areas such as mobile data security and mobile device management.
BlackBerry is betting that the enhanced security features on its BES 12 platform, coupled with a range of value-added services, will help revive revenue growth and stem its slide.
BlackBerry's shares rose 2.9 percent to $10.87 in early trading on Nasdaq on Wednesday.
